The Legendary Whispers Receive Honors and Recognition from Music Industry and Fans

Las Vegas, NV, Friday, August 27, 2007 -- One of the most respected and enduring vocal groups in the music industry, The Whispers, with a stellar career that spans over four decades, continues to rack up awards and honors for their longevity and success in the music industry.

The American Black Music Association Academy of America selected The Whispers to be named as “LIVING LEGENDS” by their selection committee of music executives, radio station programmers, music journalists, fellow musicians and entertainers. They were honored at the 2007 American Black Music Awards held in Las Vegas on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the Cashman Field Theatre. This formal “white-tie” event was one of the most exciting, informative, and gala activities in Las Vegas, as they rolled out the red carpet for their nominees, honorees, special guests and celebrity hosts.

The BMA’s mission is clear: “We must recognize yesterday’s and today’s achievers, so we can build tomorrow’s leaders.” According to Rick Warren, CEO, the Whispers serve as an inspiration for young people preparing for their own destiny, while also attaining “greatness”, as they have ascended to the top of their profession. The BMA is currently operating programs throughout the Oakland San Francisco Bay Area, Houston, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles areas to help young people reach their destiny. Information about the awards and the BMA can be ascertained at http://americanblackmusicawards.com.

This is one of many honors the Whispers have received this past year. On Jul 28, 2007, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty of Washington DC formally recognized the Whispers at Constitution Hall by proclamation citing them as role models for today’ young entertainers and excellence in the field of music and community service.

On Sunday, July 1, 2007, The San Francisco Bay Area in association with KBLX FM Radio and The City of Antioch formally recognized the whispers at an awards dinner and “Love fest” for 44 years of music, exceptional longevity, and industry professionalism, and for the current success of their CD, “For Your Ears Only” and soon to be released DVD and CD, “Whispers Live From Las Vegas” featuring a live performance of 19 of their greatest hits.

In the past two years, they have received awards from the Bay Area Blues Society, the San Francisco region of the Grammy Foundation, and cities throughout America.

BAY AREA CELEBRATES THE WHISPERS LONGEVITY

It was called the 44th Year Awards Celebration and Anniversary Dinner, but in reality, it was a “Love Fest”. Fans, friends, musicians and loved ones all gathered to shower their love and affection on the legendary Whispers at Humphrey’s On the Delta in Antioch, California.

It was a beautiful, bright and sun-drenched day on Sunday, July 1, 2007. Leaveil, Scotty, Walter and Nicholas were welcomed by over 250 excited guests as they entered the lavished ballroom at Humphrey’s. After autographs, pictures and plenty of hugs, Kevin Brown, Program Director from KBLX Radio in San Francisco, opened the evening’s festivities with a few of his best memories about the Whispers.

Kevin begin by sharing a story about a recent performance at the Paramount Theatre where fans were disappointed in the artist’s concert as well as the artist’s behavior with the guests that were in attendance. In contrast, he stated that he has been attending Whispers’ concerts for the past 17 years, and they have never put on a bad concert nor have they ever been disrespectful to their fans. His comments were greeted with resounding cheers and applauds.

Kevin went on to share a story about his daily contest called “Over Thirty, Under Thirty” where he pits the younger callers against the older callers. He asks the listeners questions about nostalgic TV Shows to see who has the most knowledge. On one occasion, he asked one of the “under 30” callers to identify the show with characters named Scotty, Mr. Spock, Sulu and Dr. McCoy. The young caller proudly exclaimed, “Oh that’s the Whispers!”

Kevin presented the Whispers with an award on behalf of KBLX FM Radio for their years in the music industry.

Betty Smith, a representative from the City of Antioch, was the second presenter. Her first gesture was to state how much she loved Scotty. The she proceeded to present the Whispers with the 44th Anniversary Award. She also informed the guests that she was in the process of raising funds to have the Whispers perform at the City’s Annual Jamboree held each summer.

As the Whispers joined Betty on Stage, with tears flowing, they expressed their gratitude, and as always, gave all the credit to their fans. Nick asked them all to take some time to listen to the last cut on the CD, “For Your Ears Only” called,
Pasted Graphic 3
“The Whispers Love You Too”. He said that the words say exactly how the Whispers feel about their fans. Leaveil shared the story about how he joined the group 38 years ago. He was never treated any differently than any other member. The only problem was that he had to sing “Off stage” for months before he was allowed to perform on stage. In those days, the Whispers’ act consisted of all types of acrobatics and Nick wanted to make sure Leaveil knew every step of the choreography. Everyone knows how perfectionistic the Whispers are about their stage presence.

Betty’s presentation was followed by a dialogue written and spoken by Frank Williams to the tune of “In The Mood”.

The next presenter was Dtrump from “Entropremer Entertainment”; He explained that James Levi, one of the most popular drummers in the Bay Area, had mentioned the Whispers 44th anniversary dinner to him, and he wanted to make a presentation on behalf of young entertainers. His framed poem states:

And the beat goes on, 40 years strong,
hit after hit, song after song,
Legendary musicians, that’s what’s going on,
Role models to youth, if they chose to see the truth.

Don’t look to hard, cause the Whispers are living proof,
A groove to lift your spirits when everything’s wrong.
Even though I’m young, I was dancing with my diapers on,
It wasn’t long, I learned to Rock Steady,
I saw the sharp suits and dance moves.
Pasted Graphic 4
Are you ready?
For many more years of the Whispers legacy,
Hall of fame musicians and lyricists, you’d better be,
It’s a beautiful time in history to commend them
And look at me now.

Having the honor to present this on everything I love,
Respect times two,
On behalf of D-Trump and the youth
We Thank You.

George “Jazzbo” Spencer was the fifth presenter. His first experience with the Whispers was as one of the musicians who went on the road with them when their hit, “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong” was climbing the charts. He recalled how hey used econoline as their transportation across country. Their first trip was to Houston; they went to the store, picked up their groceries and hit the road, driving non-stop to their destination. Upon their arrival, the promoter inquired as to why they were there. The Whispers replied, “We’re her for our performance” to which the promoter replied, “But you’re a month too early”. So they packed up their stuff, drove non-stop home, and the next month, they went shopping for groceries, jumped on the econoline and drove non-stop back to Houston.

Jazzbo quoted Duke Ellington,” There are two kinds of music … good music and the other kind”. The Whispers has always provided good music to their fans; their music is timeless and internationally acclaimed reaching all genders and age groups.

Jazzbo went on to acknowledge one of the Whispers Marketing Directors, George Aubrey, who he worked with for many years in the sixties, seventies, and eighties. George managed many groups and promoted many concerts. To everyone’s surprise, Jazzbo presented George an award for all his years in the business. George, still in shock, had to be coaxed up to the front to accept the award. The Whispers gave George a standing ovation.

Jazzbo would have gone on with many more stories had not James Levi grabbed him by the arm and escorted him off the stage.

After the presentations, it was showtime. Vivian Walker, the event planner in charge and sister to Betty Smith, first expressed that “Betty loves Scotty, but I love Walter, but Oh that Nick, but then again ooh-wee Leaveil …”; she just couldn’t make up her mind!

The show opened with Freddie Hughes who rocked the house with “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool You”, followed by his 1968 number one hit, “Send My Baby Back”.

Dr. Karriem Muhmmad, the organizer and promoter of the dinner and awards ceremony performed a song from his CD entitled, “April Fool” followed by a few standards (Autumn Leaves, Danny Boy and What a Wonderful World). He informed the guests that some of the funds raised from this event will go to prostate cancer and the Ronald McDonald House (A place where kids with cancer can stay with their family when seeking treatment away from home).

Harvey Scales had the crowd on its feet and cheering with delight; his fingers worked wonders on the piano; he is known as the “Black Liberace” and works regularly at the “Top of the Mark” in San Francisco”; any and everybody should see him at least once in their lifetime … absolutely wonderful! He has a new Cd called “I’m Here”.

The program ended with a salute to the Whispers by The Richard Lewis Band; they sang such songs as Olivia and It Just Gets Better with Time; what a great way to end a Love Fest.

Afterwards the Whispers took pictures with the guests and said their goodbyes until the next time they meet in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area where the Whispers began their career.

Whispers and Tavis Smiley Discuss The Music Industry, Success and Longevity

LOS ANGELES, CA, – Tavis Smiley, broadcaster, author, advocate, and outstanding voice for change, hosted the Whispers’ lead singers Walter and Wallace “Scotty” Scott on his radio show, “Tavis Talks”. As the smooth rhythm of their mega-hits “It Just Gets Better With Time” and “Rock Steady” flowed through the studio, Tavis engaged them in a discussion of the Whispers’ continued success and longevity, noting that during the last four decades they have crooned their way into the hearts of millions.

As Tavis played snippets from their latest CD, “For Your Ears Only”, Walter credited their success to selecting songs that create “meaningful” music that has something to say … music that’s “Lyric-conscious”. Scotty responded that the Whispers actively look for the beauty in love and romanticism rather than the graphics that dominate today’s youth-inspired music. According to Tavis (who has attended 3 or 4 of their shows during the past few years), the Whispers don’t realize what their music has done for so many people … “it makes them feel comfortable and sets the right mood for their listening pleasure”. Yet there are many radio stations that are not looking for this type of music. Scotty went on to say, “We’re like Barry Bonds, if they don’t let us get up to the plate, we can’t hit a homerun.

Fortunately, there are independent radio stations that have the Whispers’ CD in high rotation across the country. Yet without widespread radio play, “For Your Ears Only” continues to match the sales of their youthful contemporaries. Walter credits this to their faithful fan base, and the thousands of people, young and old, who desire music with meaningful and uplifting messages.
From his celebrated conversations with world figures, to his work to inspire the next generation of leaders, Newsweek profiled Tavis Smiley as one of the "20 people changing how Americans get their news" and dubbed him one of the nation's "captains of the airwaves." Smiley is the first American ever to simultaneously host signature talk shows on both public television and public radio.

Whispers "For Your Ears Only" Makes Billboard's R&B/Hip Hop Top 100

Los Angeles, CA — The Whispers new CD, on their independent label "Satin Tie", charted on Billboard's Top 100 R&B/Hip Hop Albums for the week of September 2, 2006. "For Your Ears Only" entered the chart at number "94" ahead of an impressive lineup of such favorites as Juvenile, John Legend, The Notorius B.I.G. Duets, and Common, a huge feat that is unheard of in an age where major conglomerate record labels dominate the music scene.

Duets, and Common, a huge feat that is unheard of in an age where major conglomerate record labels dominate the music scene.

The musical community continues to let its voice be heard in support of the nostalgic, classic, soul sound with a contemporary ambiance that has virtually disappeared under the overwhelming dominance of Rap and Hip Hop. But Dee Bellington, a fan in San Francisco says it best, "You Guys Are One Of The Few Artists That Have Not Forgotten That There Are Still Millions Of Us Out Here That Want And Need To Hear Some Compositions Of Depth And Weight. Butta, Hold On, Don't Say No, You Name It! This Whole Disc Nearly Made Me Weep Because Of The Nostalgic Aura Released Into The Air. The Atmosphere Just Changed!!!

It's been 9 years since their last CD, "Songbook Volume One: Songs of Babyface". With a long list of Billboard hits over the past 30 years and rigid touring schedule, the Whispers continue to win new fans, both young and old. Their popularity stems from a consistent sound, love and respect for women, meticulous choreography on stage, and staying true to themselves. Says Randy Mahon of Eagle Entertainment, "This CD is sheer genius from the sound quality to the song quality! It's classic Whispers as I know them to be, and only want to know them as. From the ballads to the up tempo songs, this is one of the few CD's I've heard where I did NOT have to song skip, I'd be cheating myself if I did." Houston, Washington DC and Chicago DJs are reporting that dance crowds are stepping all over the country to the #1 and #4 cuts. Anthony Minter sums it up, "The vintage Whispers love songs are outstanding. When I need to step up my love game, I put this CD on and the fireworks begin. These brothers sound as good if not better than they did 9 years ago."

Billboard's charting is based on sales data from Nielsen Soundscan. "For Your Ears Only" has been consistent on Soul Tracks.com Top 10, CDBaby's Top 20, and Jet Magazine's Top 20 since May while continuing to sell out in stores across the country. One store owner quotes, "As soon as I put those CD's out on the rack they grow legs and run out of here!" The songwriting team of Teena Marie, Ali Ollie Woodson, Robert Brookins, Grady Wilkins, and the Whispers' own Nicholas Caldwell, created a recipe for success focusing on love, life, spirituality and enduring relationships. As one record executive stated, "You can't stop a hit record." This album is fulfilling its own destiny.

Craig Parker, an executive at Movie Tunes was surfing the internet looking for music that was relaxing, exciting and contemporary yet conducive to general audiences in movie theatres. He happened onto the “Top Sellers” list at CDBABY.COM and the rest is history. After sampling several tunes on the Whispers CD, “For Your Ears Only”, he immediately contacted the marketing staff and insisted that the Whispers’ style of music is what he had been looking for. An agreement was reached and moviegoers across the country will now be able to listen to “Hold On” while waiting for their favorite featured movie. Movie Tunes is the largest audio programming network encompassing the entire cinema – theatre auditoriums (screens), lobbies hallways, restrooms and concessions areas – from open to close daily. In this entertaining environment more than 20 million moviegoers are exposed to music from the nation’s top stars and rising artists. “Hold On”, the #6 cut on the CD was written by Ron Wilson & Ronnie Bell, with music by Ron Wilson. It speaks on the importance of holding on to relationships. Satin Tie Productions has declared the month of June “Whispers Month at the Movies”, encouraging fans and supporters to attend the movies to support this endeavor.

Well, the musical community has spoken and the reluctant Program Directors have been overruled. The May 22nd issue of Jet has posted “For Your Ears Only” at number 18 based on a national response of retailers, distributors, music executives and industry musicians. Speaking with Sylvia Flanagan, Senior Editor at Jet Magazine, urban America’s premier news outlet and pacesetter, Ms. Flanagan and the Whispers’ Marketing Director both agreed that good music is good music no matter who sings it and regardless of the genre. The many skeptics that had warned the Whispers that their style of music couldn’t compete with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, and 50 Cent must have forgotten about that silent majority of “Baby Boomers” who had been quietly waiting for that smooth, sultry “Whispers” music to reappear. Quoting Mike T, DJ at Sirius Radio Channel 53, “"THEY PUT THEIR FOOT IN IT”! I can't get past the first 4 cuts (keep playing them over and over). Hip Hop Artist's make music to Shoot Guns and Drive By's and Artist's like the Whispers make music to Make Love to; what a difference.” Houston and Chicago DJs are reporting that steppers are stepping all over the country to the #1 and #4 cuts. With a release date of the standard edition scheduled for June 23, the Collector’s Limited Edition that dropped on February 10 originally to be available via internet stores and on the Whispers’ tour, has been in such demand that it has been released to retail outlets and distributors who can’t seem to keep enough copies. Their single, BUTTA” written by Teena Marie has been in the top 10 at KBLX Radio for the past two months. Soultracks.com has reported that “For Your Ears Only’ is the album of the month for May 2006 based on customer demands and the number of hits on its site. The CD has been number one for six weeks at CDBABY.COM and for five weeks on the “Rhythm and Soul” charts on Solar Radio in the UK. AMAZON.COM can’t keep enough in stock.

As many fans have continuously stated, “The Whispers Just Get Better With Time”.

Fans Turn out in Droves to Welcome the Whispers to Philadelphia

Fans, young and old, came out in droves on Saturday afternoon to get “up close and personal” with the Whispers at the Jazsound, one of the largest urban record stores located in the heart of Philadelphia. The Whispers were in town to perform that evening on their “FOR YOUR EARS ONLY” Tour, at Temple University’s Licouras Center, where they have continuously captured the hearts of Philadelphians.

Upon their arrival at Jazsound, the front of their limousine overflowed into the intersection so the guys could gain entrance to the store amidst horn-blowing and yelling from motorists who, after recognizing the Whispers, proceeded to exit their cars just to get a handshake and to share a few historical moments with this legendary group. Patty Jackson of WDAS 105.3 FM was playing their single, “BUTTA” on the radio as The Whispers entered the store and ascended the stairs in anticipation of meeting their fans.

They were delighted to greet an extensive line of mothers, daughters, grandsons and the like who were anxious to share their favorite Whispers moment and get autographs for their newly purchased CD, “For Your Ears Only”. Many turned out, not just to purchase the new CD, but for the opportunity to thank the group who has continued to bring them romantic and socially significant music during the last four decades. The presence of teens and kids under twelve years old was the highlight of the day. Kim Robinson’s son, Shykeir (pictured right with The Whispers), rejected the idea of shopping for Easter clothes just to meet the Whispers. Says Kim, “He literally dragged me into the store when he found out they were here”. 10 year old Quadirrah Tuggles (pictured left) blushed as she took pictures with the guys while her mom, Rosetta Rider, proudly announced that she “raised” Quadirrah on Whispers’ music. As one teen strolled in with two of his friends, he emphatically schooled them, saying, “Now I’m going to educate you on The Whispers … They sing real music”!
page1_blog_entry9_2
Earlier that week, Darryl King, Manager of Jazsound, had informed the Whispers’ marketing staff that his record store was “Whisperville” … the Whispers’ stories filled the air as the line continue to grow longer and longer. Finally, the line had to be cut so the Whispers could prepare for their evening performance. They autographed again at the Licouras Center after their performance. It was obvious to all involved that the release of their new CD has returned them to the “Spotlight”. As one fan yelled out, “The Whispers are back with a vengeance”.

“For Your Ears Only” is the first to be produced on the Whispers’ independent label, Satin Tie Productions headed by the Whispers themselves. It’s a heartfelt project and is definitely created for and dedicated to their many fans as a way of saying thanks for all of the years of support”, says Lead singers Scotty and Walter Scott, and a “Labor of Love and a body of work blessed by God”, according to Nicholas Caldwell, singer/songwriter of the Whispers.

The song collection is a mixture of classic soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, and pop, performed in “pure Whisper” tradition from the classic “Don’t Say No” penned by their musical director Grady Wilkins and Road Manager Alonzo Ward, to the smooth, sexy “Butta”, written and arranged by the great Teena Marie. On Valentine’s Day, wives and lovers will be serenaded with the passions of “Diamonds”, “Love Stroking”, “Hold On” and Nicholas Caldwell’s “Love”. On the dating scene, guys looking for a soul mate, can woo them with Ollie Woodson’s “Can I Get Next To You” and “It’s You” (Nicholas Caldwell and the Whispers’ guitarist Emilio Conesa). For the dancers and steppers, “Get It On” and “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” will electrify the party goers and add a touch of soulful, funky class to the local DJ’s night club collection. The “Believers” and “Fans” were not forgotten; “I Sing This Song For You” is dedicated to the Man Upstairs whose gifts of song and songwriting elevated the Whispers to where they are today. As for their longtime fans, the last song on the CD, “The Whispers Love You Too” says it all: “My heart compels me to tell each and every one of you, if it’s the last thing I do, I pray you know it’s true, the Whispers Love You Too!” Whispers’ fans will not be disappointed. A Collector’s Limited edition of the CD will be available at any of the public venues where they will be performing beginning Mid February.

The Whispers have finally achieved their goal of establishing an independent label where they can exercise their creative talents and manage their own musical destiny in the new millennium.
